Hyllus Maris Memorial Lecture

To mark La Trobe University’s 50th Anniversary and International Women’s Day, we will host the 2017 Hyllus Maris Memorial Lecture on 8 March 2017.

This special lecture will feature an Indigenous academic procession and Welcome to Country, in addition to a very special performance by Indigenous students.

We are also very pleased to announce that Indigenous author Dr Anita Heiss will be our guest speaker in 2017.

About the Hyllus Maris Memorial Lecture

The Hyllus Maris Memorial Lecture was the first memorial lecture in honor of an Aboriginal woman on an Australian university campus. The Lecture honours Hyllus Maris’ visionary work in Aboriginal education and also honours the contribution and participation of Aboriginal people in higher education generally in this country.

The Hyllus Maris Memorial Lecture was launched in 1999 and was co-hosted by La Trobe University’s Women’s Studies Department and the then Aboriginal Liaison Unit, with Koori Women Mean Business and the ATSIC Binjirru Regional Council.

The Lecture is an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to meet at La Trobe University and share in a celebraiton of mutual significance.
